Free parking for Small Business Saturday

New Forest District Council is offering free parking on Saturday 7 December to support local businesses.  Shoppers will be able to park for free in all council-run car parks to mark the UK’s first ‘Small Business Saturday’ – a national campaign aimed at encouraging people to shop locally and support independent shops.

The 2014 Brand New Forest card will also be launched in Burley on 7 December.  The card scheme, now in its fourth year, is designed to stimulate local business activity by providing cardholders with special offers and discounts throughout the New Forest.

Changes to sandbag provision during flooding

For several years the District Council has provided sandbags for collection from various locations and during some events have delivered sandbags to properties.  This has often helped alleviate incidents of flooding, albeit there is no statutory duty for local authorities to provide sandbags.

There are now many flood protection products available to property owners that offer better performance and a much enhanced level of protection compared to sandbags and which, in the long-term, are more environmentally sustainable.  They range from simple door guards and air brick covers to complete protection systems.

In recognition of this growing market in property-level protection products, and of increasing concerns about the unsustainable nature of using sandbags due to their short life and limited effectiveness, NFDC proposes to stop making sandbags available to the general public from Spring next year.

The National Flood Forum, an independent national charity which helps people to prepare for flooding, publishes the ‘Blue Pages’, a directory of products and services designed to help protect against flooding.

This can be viewed at www.nationalfloodforum.org.uk or a copy obtained by contacting The National Flood Forum, Snuff Mill Warehouse, Bewdley, Worcestershire DY12 2EL, telephone 01299 403 055.

Road closure planned for New Inn Road

New Forest District Council, acting as agent for Hampshire County Council, has made an Order to allow carriageway surface treatment works to be carried out on various roads in the New Forest.

This includes New Inn Road which will be closed between its junction with the A336 Southampton Road and the junction with Chinham Road.

The alternative route will be via Southampton Road and Chinham Road which will be signed.

The Order came into effect on 25 November but the road closure date will be some time after this.  Two weeks’ notice of the closure will be given.  It is expected that the works should take no longer then three days
