January 2010 Bulletin

Splitwind Pond
The Council has recently arranged for a local contractor to carry out some routine maintenance at Splitwind Pond in Romsey Road. The result is a much tidier pond and an improved local facility. The Council is presently working on a management plan for the pond which will identify maintenance tasks on an ongoing basis.
Prior to the recent clearance, the presence of New Zealand pygmyweed had been identified. The Council will be working with the Hampshire & Wildlife Trust to eradicate the weed through the Trust’s New Forest Non-Native Plants Project. Members will be receiving a presentation on the project at its meeting on Tuesday 9 March (7 pm, Copythorne Parish Hall).

Road improvements
Two roads in the parish, Whitemoor Lane and Winsor Road, will be closed at certain times during the next few months for carriageway repairs and surface dressing works. Repairs are likely to be carried during January or February and the dressing works during the period March and September. Diversions will operate during the closures.

Public footpaths
Residents living at the north western end of the parish may be interested to know that the track known as “The Cut”, running between the A36 and Whinwhistle Road East Wellow, has been formally added to the Definitive Footpath Map. The track is much used by local residents but until now has not had footpath status. The path is deemed to lie within Copythorne parish, immediately adjoining the parish of Wellow.

Local Policing
The crime figures supplied to us via PC Dee Faulkner are now being produced in a different format. Previously we were able to extract incident details just for Copythorne parish but the statistics are now only published for the whole beat area which includes Tatchbury, Bramshaw, Brook, Fritham and Minstead. We are discussing with PC Faulkner whether the reports can revert to their original style.

In the meantime, the summary for the beat area for November is as follows:

  • 72 reported incidents during the month, which is fewer than for October
  • 1 robbery, unfortunately at Bartley Post Office. Two men arrested
  • 1 assault at a local residential establishment
  • burglaries
  • 5 thefts, two involving drive-offs from a Forest petrol station. Man also arrested for stealing cut logs from the Forest
  • 8 thefts from motor vehicles, primarily in the Fritham, Bramshaw Wood, Pipers Wait and Bramble Hill Forest car parks
  • 8 road traffic incidents, two involving animal deaths or injury on Forest roads.

The Police remind residents to be extra vigilant when leaving properties unoccupied, to ensure that doors and windows are locked and that keys are removed from locks and placed out of sight.

The Parish Council
The Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7 pm in the Copythorne Parish Hall (rear extension). Members of the public are very welcome to attend the meetings and speak on any matter of concern during the first five minutes of the meeting.

Local planning applications are discussed at both full Council and Planning meetings, and the Council welcomes the views of both applicants and neighbours to help formulate a response to the planning authority.

The dates of the next few meetings are:

Tuesday 12 January 2010 Planning
Tuesday 26 January 2010 Council
Tuesday 9 February 2010 Planning
