July 2010 Bulletin

Make recycling your goal during the World Cup

New Forest District Council is encouraging people to recycle their cans, bottles and pizza boxes during the World Cup.  Thousands of people are stocking up on refreshments and food to enjoy while watching their favourite football team.

NFDC reminds residents to recycle their empty bottles, cans and other recyclable materials and get into the recycling habit during the summer months.  Cans may be placed in the clear recycling sacks or at the recycling centres.  Glass bottles can go to one of the many glass recycling sites around the district.

In addition, the council now collects mixed glass and there is no need to separate the glass into green, clear and brown when you visit the bottle bank.

Pre-census survey under way in the New Forest

New Forest residents are being informed of a three month survey currently under way in the district on behalf of the Office for National Statistics.  NFDC can assure people that the survey is genuine, being carried out in preparation for next year’s Census.

Officers employed by Capita will be in the area for the next few months to check the accuracy of addresses.  On some occasions, the officers may wish to speak to the occupier to ask how many Census forms will be needed for next year.

Each officer will carry an identity cared and at no point will they ask to come into the property.  If a person does ask to enter, the homeowner is advised not to let them in, close the door and call the police if they are concerned.

Wireless internet at the Parish Hall

Residents are reminded that the Parish Council has recently installed a wireless broadband facility at Copythorne Parish Hall.  It is available for use by regular users of the Hall with the use of an access code.  Anyone wishing to use the connection is asked to contact the Clerk to the Council for details.

Local Policing

New Forest police are cracking down on lead thefts following a recent spate of incidents, some in Copythorne.  The Safer New Forest Partnership has pledged £2000 for the purchase of DNA grease-marking kits to help police officers track down and prosecute metal thieves.  Many businesses targeted by thieves have replaced the stolen lead with a substitute that has no scrap value, ensuring they do not become repeat victims.

Crime statistics for the Copythorne area for May include the following:

4 assaults, including a man assaulted by another driver during a road rage incident

Another month free of dwelling burglaries but the police remind residents to secure their property when unoccupied

Non-dwelling burglaries include theft from a golf ball machine at Paultons Golf Club, tools stolen from a shed in Winsor and a pushbike stolen in Bartley.

Three paddling pools and three pool pumps were stolen from Cadnam Garden Centre.

Thefts in the area include electric fencing units stolen at Newbridge and a large number of drums and coils of copper, worth up to £10,000, stolen from an electrical contractor’s yard in the Winsor area.

Shed and garage break-ins are on the increase and residents are urged to report all suspicious activity at the time it is happening, by dialling 999.
