New care advice line for the elderly

New Forest residents aged 60 and over and their carers can benefit from a new care helpline service just launched.  Hampshire County Council has partnered with national charity Counsel and Care to provide a specialist advice phone line for older people in the New Forest area.

Local residents can contact Counsel and Care for advice on care and support issues affecting older people by calling the advice line on 0845 300 7585 or by logging on to their website at www.counselandcare.org.uk

The advice line is equally relevant whether people are paying for their own care, are supported by Hampshire County Council, or simply have questions about possible future care and support needs.

New Forest residents urged to get composting

New Forest householders and gardeners are urged to help the environment with a special offer on composting.  Composters, kitchen caddies and a rainsaver kit are on offer to residents at a heavily discounted rate in a bid to get more people recycling their kitchen and garden waste, as well as capturing rainwater.  Composting is a cheap and easy way to transform natural waste, such as potato peelings, teabags and egg shells, into a nutritious product for the garden.

The special incentive offers a 220 litre compost bin at £14 (rrp £39), a five litre kitchen bin for £4 (rrp £5) and a complete rainsaver kit, including water butt, stand and rain diverter, for £37.95 (rrp £60).

To order, visit www.hants.getcomposting.com or call 0845 130 6090 quoting HANTSSO1L.

Landscape and wildlife in the New Forest National Park

The New Forest National Park Authority has been working on two initiatives concerning the landscape and wildlife of the National Park.  The Landscape Strategy and the Biodiversity Action Plan are daughter documents of the National Park Management Plan and have been produced in draft form for public consultation.

The views of the New Forest community are being sought at a series of 5 road shows, with more formal consultation planned later in the autumn.  The road show details are:

Wednesday 2 June   Hyde Memorial Hall, Frogham, Fordingbridge
Friday 4 June   Masonic Hall, Lymington High Street
Wednesday 16 June Beech Room, Lyndhurst Community Centre
Friday 18 June  Oak Room, Village Hall, Vicarage Road, Marchwood
Thursday 1 July  Landford Village Hall, Lyndhurst Road, Landford

Shared opportunities

New Forest taxpayers could benefit from plans to share office premises at Lymington Town Hall between the New Forest National Park Authority and New Forest District Council.  The two authorities have been in talks to discuss the benefits of the NFNPA setting up its headquarters at Lymington Town Hall next year.

It is hoped that a decision will be reached in June for NFNPA staff to share the town centre premises with NFDC and for refurbishment work to commence in the autumn.  The government (DEFRA) has given initial approval to fund the necessary works for a new headquarters for the NFNPA, which is currently operating from South Efford House at Everton, near Lymington.

If the proposal gets the go-ahead at the NFDC cabinet meeting in June, some of the town hall staff would move out of Lymington to other council premises, which may well include adapting existing office accommodation in Appletree Court, Lyndhurst to utilise it in a more sustainable and efficient way.

Local Policing

Beat surgeries are now being held locally each month enabling residents to meet the local beat officer, PC Dee Faulkner, to discuss issues or concerns in the neighbourhood.  These are held on the first Wednesday of the month at:

Minstead Village shop 10.30 am – 11.30 am
Bartley Stores  12 pm – 1 pm
Bramshaw Village Store  2 pm – 3 pm

A surgery is also held every fourth Friday at the Trusty Servant pub in Minstead at 6 pm.

Crime statistics for the Copythorne area for April include the following:
Assault:  An assault on a police officer following arrest of a male for a positive breath test.

Another assault was a result of an argument between two 11 year olds in Bartley.    Apologies were made and no further action will be taken.

Dwelling burglaries:  None again this month but residents are being asked to ensure that property is left secure with all windows and doors locked and all keys left out of sight.

Non dwelling burglary:  A caravan left in storage on a farm on the A36, Ower was entered and three DVDs stolen.

Criminal damage:  Damage caused to the rear light of a vehicle in Bartley.  Two reports of damage to a local residential establishments also being investigated.

Thefts from vehicles:  Once again, incidents have mainly occurred in the Fritham and Bramshaw car parks where people have either left valuables on display or have been watched depositing valuables in the boot or under seats.   A handbag was also stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the car park of an equestrian centre at Ower.
