September 2010 Bulletin

Motorbikes at Cadnam

Following the recent public meeting at Copythorne Parish Hall, the highway authority has acted swiftly to address the motorbike nuisance at Cadnam.

For some time, local residents have complained about the dual carriageway between junction 1 of the M27 and Cadnam roundabout being used as a race track by motorcyclists.

The dual carriageway had no speed limit and noise and disturbance were a frequent occurrence for people living nearby.

The high profile public meeting, attended by the local MP, County, District and Parish Councillors, highway representatives and the Police, has resulted in a temporary 50 mph speed limit and other measures to reduce speed and improve road safety.

The Police will also step up enforcement while the situation is reviewed to see if any other changes are needed.

The Haywain Junction

Staying on the highway theme, some alterations were made some months ago to the line markings at Bartley crossroads (near the Haywain public house).

The Parish Council has complained that the markings are confusing as right-turning motorists (particularly east and west bound) have difficulty in deciding how to position themselves safely to complete the turn.

The highway authority will be reviewing the line markings shortly but if any resident has any comments perhaps they could contact the Clerk to the Council with their views.

The National Park Authority – new Chief Executive

The New Forest National Park now has a new Chief Executive in the form of Alison Barnes.

Ms Barnes has commenced a programme of visits to Parish Councils to introduce herself and is due to attend a Copythorne Council meeting on Tuesday 23 November 2010.

Local residents are very welcome to attend to hear her presentation and ask any questions about the Authority or the New Forest generally.

The Parish Council Planning Role

The Parish Council has recently reviewed its procedures for dealing with local planning applications.

After a full discussion, members decided that the present arrangements adequately meet the Council’s needs and that few changes, if any, are needed.

As a result applications will continue to be discussed at both main Council meetings and the separate mid-monthly Planning meetings.

All applications will be discussed, regardless of size, nature of the proposal etc, and plans will be displayed by projector at each meeting.

Public participation will continue to apply and both applicants and neighbours will have an opportunity to speak on each application.

To check on which planning applications are being discussed at a particular meeting, go to the parish web site at www.copythorne.org.uk and click on ‘Planning’ on the top menu.

Cook and Eat Classes

Parents and children from three children’s centres in the New Forest are teaming up to pilot a healthy eating programme thanks to Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council, NHS Hampshire and Chances 4 Change, part of the Big Lottery Fund.

Cook and East is a six session programme offered to parents at the Phoenix Children’s Centre in New Milton, Forest First Children’s Centre in Fawley and The Waterside Children’s centre in Hythe.

The aim is to teach basic cookery skills, improve awareness and understanding of the importance of a balanced diet and the opportunity to taste new foods in a fun and informal environment.
