166. NEW FOREST NON-NATIVE PLANTS PROJECT
Catherine Chatters of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust gave a presentation on this topic.
A special 3-year project was being led by the Trust to combat numerous non-native plants in the New Forest. Particular examples were Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam and Giant hogweed which, if left unchecked, could devastate large areas and cause problems for farmers and fisherman and for the countryside generally. Many species had been introduced to the UK in the 19th century as ornamental plants but were now threatening native wildflowers.
In this area, the Trust would be concentrating on pulling up Himalayan balsam, especially along the Cadnam river. Volunteers were needed to help on working parties during the summer. The Clerk agreed to supply contact details for the local Scouts and Guides. Ms Chatters would provide the Council with some text for an article in Stanleys Own and on the website.
